Hematite

Hematite is an iron oxide mineral with a hardness of 5-6. It is 70% iron and is mined in England, Mexico, Brazil, Australia and US. Its name derives from the Greek haimatitis or ‘blood red’ referring to its color in powdered form. The word hemoglobin (the iron in blood causing a red color) shares the same root word with hematite. This association with blood goes back to Neolithic burials, which were found to have been smeared with powdered hematite. Later in history it was worn to protect the wearer from bleeding. Because of its high iron content hematite will carry a magnetic charge when heated at low temperatures, yet it will lose its magnetism at high temperatures.
