Larimar

Larimar is a rare form of pectolite, a mineral found in cavities of basaltic lava. It displays patterns of blue, blue-green and white resembling the tropical ocean water. It was discovered in the 1970’s and is only found in the Dominican Republic. It is a sodium calcium silicate mineral with a hardness ranging from 4.5 to 7 (the darker blue stones ranging closer to 7). The name comes from a combination of Larissa and Mar, given to the stone by a Dominican who named it after his daughter and the Spanish word for sea. Larimar is very rare because it is found in such a small area, the entire deposit is influenced by many factors. It is mined by hand, as heavy machinery and explosives would destroy it. The best quality of larimar is found nearly 100 ft. below the surface in small veins taking quite some time to gather. Rainfall during the 5-month hurricane season often closes the mine from flooding. Even after it is mined only 10% is usually of jewelry quality.
